How to Handle a Dental Emergency

What should I do if I break or chip a tooth?

If a tooth is broken or knocked out, act quickly. Teeth have the best chance of being saved if reinserted within 30–60 minutes. Handle the tooth only by the crown (chewing surface), not the root. Gently rinse it with water or milk—do not scrub. If possible, place it back into the socket. If not, store it in milk and contact our office immediately.

How can I relieve a toothache?

Toothaches are common and can happen when you are eating or drinking something hot or cold. There are many possible causes, such as infected gums, tooth decay, a tooth abscess, exposed roots, or something else. Essentially, your body is telling you something is wrong with your oral health, and you should have a dentist check it. You can try rinsing your mouth with warm water and applying an ice pack around the area to relieve the pain.

What should I do if I lose a filling or crown?

This is not a major incident, but it should not be taken too lightly either. If this happens, you might feel some temperature sensitivity in the area. To help you with any discomfort, you can rinse your mouth with warm water to try to keep the area clean until the filling or crown is repaired.

Can an emergency dentist remove a tooth?

Our dentist will first do an assessment of your situation, and if needed, they are well trained to do tooth extractions and even wisdom teeth extractions.

How do I prepare a dental first aid kit?

Along with your regular first aid kit, keep dental essentials like temporary dental cement, floss, gauze, and a tooth preservation kit at home. It’s also helpful to save our contact information somewhere easy to find during an emergency.
