What Can I Do And Not Do After Getting a Dental Implant

After a dental implant surgery procedure, you should do the following.

Apply Pressure

During the first hours after the operation, we will have to exert pressure on the wound with the help of gauze that the dentist will provide us with. Throughout the day, if the bleeding does not stop completely, we can change the gauze and keep it under pressure in the area to stop the bleeding completely.

Rest

All professionals recommend waiting at least two days to return to sports or activities that require great physical effort. After all, the placement of a dental implant is still an intervention, and our body will need rest to stabilize and regenerate the tissues in that area.

Apply cold to the area

Inflammation of the tissues surrounding the implant is one of the most common symptoms, so it is advisable to apply cold to that area to prevent swelling and reduce discomfort.

Sleeping on your side and with your head higher

Professionals recommend that during the first night after surgery, the patient sleeps with the head a little higher than the rest of the body and preferably lies in a lateral position. This way, if the wound starts to bleed in the middle of the night, no plugging will occur, and it can drain naturally to the outside.

Soft diet

The first week after the intervention, it is recommended to have an extremely soft diet based on liquids and crushed foods.

Take the medication

Our dentist will indicate the medication that we will have to take in the days following the operation. It is usually necessary to continue taking antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for at least a week to avoid new infections and reduce pain.

There are a few things you SHOULD NOT do after a dental implant surgery procedure.

Don't smoke or drink alcohol.

One of the first things professionals advise their patients against is smoking or drinking alcohol during the week following the intervention.

This is because tobacco or alcohol is a very harmful substance for the health of our gums, which can cause an infection of the area and make the healing of the tissues inadequate.

Do not drink or eat hot foods.

It is recommended that you avoid eating scorching food, as it stimulates blood circulation and may cause further bleeding from the wound.

Don't make a mess, and don't brush the area.

This does not mean that we should not brush our teeth, but we should do so much more carefully and without touching the wound area until the stitches have fallen out or been reabsorbed.

Neither is it recommended to rinse or spit, as this could open the wound and cause further bleeding.

In general, following all these indications, the healing process of the implants is always satisfactory. However, if we observe that the wound does not heal well and that we have a lot of discomfort in the area despite following all these indications, we should urgently call our dentist and request a new visit.
