Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that go over an existing tooth. They are handcrafted to look like natural teeth and most people won’t be able to tell the difference! Crowns can correct a variety of cosmetic and restorative dental issues, including:
Dental crowns are a versatile treatment option that offer multiple benefits, including:
Restoring strength and function: Protects weakened teeth from further damage.
Natural appearance: Designed to look and feel like your natural teeth.
Durability: High-quality crowns can last for many years with proper care.
Improved comfort: Restores your ability to chew and speak with ease.
Smile enhancement: Provides a natural-looking solution for damaged or discoloured teeth.
Getting a dental crown is a common and straightforward procedure that helps restore and protect a damaged tooth. Here’s what you can typically expect during the process:
Your dentist will begin by examining your tooth to determine if a crown is the best solution. X-rays may be taken to check the health of the roots and surrounding bone. If the tooth is severely decayed or infected, a root canal may be required before placing the crown.
At your first appointment, the dentist will reshape the tooth to make space for the crown. This involves gently reducing the tooth’s size so the crown can fit securely. If a large portion of the tooth is missing, a filling material may be used to build it up and support the crown.
Once the tooth is prepared, your dentist will take an impression (digital scan or mold) of your teeth. This is sent to a dental lab where your custom crown is created. While waiting, usually 1 to 2 weeks, you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown to protect your tooth and maintain your smile.
At your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and your permanent crown is placed. The dentist will check the fit, shape, and color before cementing it securely. Once in place, the crown will look and feel like a natural tooth.
It’s normal to feel slight sensitivity or soreness for a few days, especially if your tooth was reshaped extensively. Over-the-counter pain relief can help. Within a week, the crown should feel comfortable and function like a regular tooth.
With proper care, your crown can last 10–15 years or more. Daily brushing and flossing, along with regular dental check-ups, are essential to maintain both your crown and your natural teeth. Avoiding habits such as chewing ice or grinding teeth can also extend the lifespan of your crown.
